What is the Alexander Technique?

We are increasingly aware that being mindful of our bodies can benefit our overall physical and mental wellbeing and the Alexander Technique is the perfect way to achieve this. 

 

The Alexander Technique is a practical skill that places balance, co-ordination and poise at the heart of psycho-physical health.

Alexander Technique teachers are key in helping you to develop an improved sensory awareness of how you use your body so that you have greater conscious awareness of how you react physically and mentally to stimuli.

It is the sensory and conscious

re-education of your use

The Alexander Technique is a wonderful ‘body work’ skill that integrates mind and body in such a way that each functions with minimum stress or tension and maximum efficiency. Its focus is not on the particular but on the whole movement.

Benefits can last a lifetime as people are enabled to be more in the here and now, through improved mental and physical awareness.

It is a learning process

The Alexander Technique emphasises learning, it is not about ‘fixing’ a particular problem.

 

Through gentle hands on guidance, verbal instruction and observation, you will grow a sensory awareness of your body and the way it moves. You will also learn where you can use less tension and effort. This may help you manage pain, avoid injury, feel good and / or choose how you react to whatever life throws at you in a more considered and calm way.

As it is a skill you learn, it does not offer a quick fix cure, nor is it a therapy even if it does feel great! 

There are no marketable catchphrases to say what you will gain from it as every individual has their own unique experience and ways of learning. I strongly encourage you to come and try to see if it is for you.
